An impressive building still has to move water, manage its internal environment and serve the people inside. Yewande Akinola’s career offers a way into that less photographed side of engineering: the systems that make architecture usable.
In her Institution of Engineering and Technology profile, published in February 2023, Akinola described starting at Arup as a graduate engineer in environmental services. Early projects included schools, airports and stadiums.
She subsequently spent three years in Shanghai working on very tall buildings. The same profile described her later work at Laing O’Rourke in innovation and sustainability; these are documented career stages rather than an assumption about today’s job title.
Her account of becoming a Chartered Engineer is particularly useful for younger professionals. It emphasises recording experience and showing competence, making professional recognition a matter of evidenced responsibility rather than a glamorous project list.
