Market brief
Three rates can tell three different stories.
A bank quote, the official NFEM reference and a street-level parallel-market quote are not interchangeable. This page keeps them apart, names the date behind each number and explains whether the figure is reported, calculated or delayed.

Stock trading, without the hype
Five checks before your first order
A share is a unit of ownership, not a guaranteed payout. Prices can rise, fall or become difficult to sell.
- 01
Know what you are buying
Read the company’s results, announcements and risks. A familiar brand or rising price is not enough.
- 02
Verify the operator
Use the SEC Nigeria register to confirm that the stockbroker or capital-market operator is authorised.
- 03
Ask about every cost
Understand commissions, statutory charges, funding fees and the price at which an order may actually execute.
- 04
Keep your contract note
The SEC’s investor guide says investors should ask for and review a contract note whenever listed shares are bought or sold.
- 05
Protect the long view
Diversify, avoid borrowed money you cannot repay and never treat a social-media tip as due diligence.
How we verify
Every number needs a label.
The USD official figure is the reported 25 September NFEM close. CBN describes the daily NFEM rate as a volume-weighted average and the official rate for the day.
The EUR and GBP official references are editorial calculations, not direct CBN retail quotes: the NFEM USD close is combined with the ECB’s 25 September reference rates of EUR 1 = USD 1.1403 and EUR 1 = GBP 0.86045.
Parallel-market figures reproduce the latest dated user-reported averages visible at publication. They can differ sharply across Abuja, Lagos, Kano, Port Harcourt and other markets, and they may move while this page remains open.
NGX index and activity figures use the completed 25 September session. Selected-share prices are shown for orientation only. Readers should verify any intended order with a registered broker.
