Conflict and Ebola collide in eastern Congo

A fast-growing outbreak is testing health systems already weakened by displacement, insecurity and attacks on response teams.

Government data reported by the Associated Press put Congo’s 2026 Ebola outbreak above 6,100 confirmed cases and 3,000 deaths by early September. The Bundibugyo strain and gaps in tracing have made the response especially difficult.

The outbreak cannot be separated from the conflict around it. Population movement, fragile clinics, delayed pay for health workers and attacks on response teams disrupt the careful work of identifying contacts and isolating infections.

Numbers in a rapidly changing epidemic must be updated cautiously. The immediate priorities are trusted local communication, safe access for health teams, protection for patients and staff, and cross-border coordination that does not criminalize communities seeking care.
