New Yam festivals are especially important in Igbo communities and other yam-growing cultures. They mark harvest, honour labour and provide a moment for families and communities to gather before the new crop is widely eaten.

There is no single national script. Local authority, religion, dance, masquerade and diaspora adaptation shape each celebration, so visitors should follow community guidance rather than treating sacred elements as spectacle.
